Medical Terms
General Terms
Chronic:
A condition that lasts or recurs over an extended period of time.
Congenital:
A condition present at birth. This is may or may not be an inherited condition.
Inherited Defect:
A genetic condition passed from parent to offspring.
Specific Conditions
Congenital Liver Problems:
Abnormal blood vessels coursing through the liver resulting in a build up of toxins in the blood stream. Affected dogs may develop a variety of outward signs including stunted growth, intermittent loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, increased water intake and urination, weakness, disorientation, blindness and seizures.
Periodontal disease:
Disease of the gums, teeth and the underlying bone. It results from the build-up of plaque which is an accumulation of bacteria, saliva and food particles on the surface of the teeth and along the gum margins. Aside from causing bad breath and an unsightly appearance to the teeth, plaque destroys the attachment of the tooth root to the jaw bone. Left untreated this condition can lead to tooth loss.
Patellar Luxation:
A condition in which one or both kneecaps dislocate from their normal positions. This is an inherited defect that is more common in smaller breeds of dogs. The severity of this condition varies and may require medical and/or surgical treatment. A dog with patellar luxation is more likely to developing arthritis and may exhibit intermittent lameness.
Congenital Deformity of the Nostrils:
A narrowed opening to the nasal passage which may result in noisy breathing or more serious problems such as difficulties breathing and a tendency to suffer heat stroke.
Corneal Pigmentation and Scarring:
A loss of transparency of the surface of the eye due to deposits of pigment and/or scar tissue. Some common causes include chronic irritation from malformed eyelids, misdirected eyelashes and lack of sufficient tear production. Treatment may require lifelong medical therapy and/or surgery on the eyelids or cornea (surface of the eye) itself.
Chronic Ear Disease:
Ear infections, allergies and the structure of the ear canals may each contribute to recurring ear problems. Over time this may result in narrowing of the ear canals, accumulation of wax and pus, discomfort and hearing loss. Treatment requires regular cleaning of the ear canals as well as medication for infection and inflammation as needed. If the problem persists surgery may be necessary.
Limb deformity (dropped carpi):
This refers to abnormalities of the ligaments and/or bones that affect the alignment of the legs and paws. Many dogs with this condition require medication for pain relief and are more prone to developing arthritis.
Entropion/Eyelid Deformity:
Inversion of the upper and/or lower eyelids creating irritation to the surface of the eye that can lead to permanent eye damage. This is almost always a congenital condition although injury to the eyelid can cause the lid to chronically rub against the cornea (surface of the eye). Medication can sometimes be used to treat the symptoms of the disease, although most dogs will require surgery due to the severity of the deformity.
Even with successful surgery some patients require lifelong eye medication.
Chronic skin disease:
This refers to infection and/or inflammation of the skin. Excessive skin folds predispose to recurring skin disease and provide a very favorable environment for yeast and microscopic skin parasites. Common manifestations of this problem include scratching and chewing at the paws as well as recurring ear infections. Treatment is often only able to control rather than cure the underlying problem.
Heart Murmur:
This refers to an unusual heart sound which may be innocent or reflect disease. Substandard living conditions, genetics and age all play a role in the development and progression of heart murmurs. It is important that your veterinarian monitor the heart sounds on a regular basis to determine if specific tests or treatments are indicated. Some dogs will eventually develop heart failure and require daily medication.
