Humane Society of Missouri rescues 152 animals from property in Monroe County

UPDATE-April 2, 2008

Animals rescued:
65 dogs including a Catahoula type female with six 2-week old puppies
6 cats
5 rabbits
4 horses
4 goats
67 chickens and ducks
1 female newborn calf born by emergency Cesarean section performed in the field today. The mother was severely compromised and did not survive.

Monroe County RescueThe dogs, cats and rabbits were taken to the Humane Society of Missouri headquarters on Macklind Avenue in St. Louis. The horses, goats and fowl were taken to the Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri. The newborn calf is in the care of the on-site veterinarian.

The animals will be cared for by the Humane Society of Missouri until the disposition hearing at 9 a.m., April 24 in at the Monroe County Courthouse in Paris, Missouri.


Humane Society of Missouri rescuing more than 50 animals from property in Monroe County

Organization continues to care for 170 animals affected by recent flooding;
Is on standby to respond to possible additional flooding in southern Missouri

April 2, 2008- Working in cooperation with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, the Humane Society of Missouri is rescuing more than 50 dogs and several horses believed to be endangered Calf from Monroe County Rescueon a property near Madison, Missouri. The team includes experienced animal rescue professionals and an independent veterinarian. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department issued a warrant that was served today. Many of the dogs have upper respiratory problems, are thin and have hair loss. Some of the horses are thin. Many of the dogs are chained in several metal trailers or are in bare earth, open enclosures with no access to adequate shelter. Investigators found insufficient food for the number of animals on the property and no clean, accessible water.

Monroe County RescueThe rescued dogs will be taken to the Humane Society’s headquarters on Macklind Avenue in St. Louis for triage. The horses will be taken to the Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri. The animals will remain in the custody of the Humane Society of Missouri until the disposition hearing in Monroe County.

Representatives of the Humane Society of Missouri and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department have been working for several years with the owner of these animals. Recommendations have been made regarding the number of animals that could properly be cared for and adequate and appropriate food and Horse rescued from Monroe Countywater, shelter, and veterinary care. Recent visits to the property by the Sheriff’s Department indicated many of the animals were in immediate jeopardy.

“It is very distressing that these animals continue to suffer,” said Carmen Skelly, Statewide Investigator for the Humane Society of Missouri. “We are very gratified that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and Prosecutor’s Office have worked so closely with us to ensure this situation will not continue.”
