Rescued Chihuahua remains in guarded condition
at the Humane Society of Missouri
Reward increased to $4,000 for information about abuser

Charlotte on day of rescue - July 27, 2006
Charlotte recovering

Charlotte, the one-year-old Chihuahua rescued July 27 by a concerned citizen and the Humane Society of Missouri, remains in stable, yet guarded condition at the Humane Society’s Veterinary Medical Center on Macklind Avenue. She continues to be closely monitored by the Humane Society’s veterinary staff, and although they are hopeful her condition will improve, the outcome is still uncertain.

According to Dr. Melinda Fleming, Assistant Director of Veterinary Services, grotesque swelling to Charlotte’s head quickly decreased after the removal of the zip tie wrap that was tightly attached around her neck. However, medical tests have revealed that Charlotte suffers from a heart murmur, anemia and heartworms. She was also malnourished.

“We are aggressively treating her and continually monitoring her condition,” says Dr. Fleming. “She is eating and drinking, although, until she more fully recovers, we cannot determine the full extent of her injuries.

Charlotte underwent spay surgery last week and is recovering normally. She will receive treatment for heartworms once she fully recovers from the surgery and other critical health conditions. Because Charlotte’s prognosis is unknown at this time, Humane Society staff are providing her with 24-hour care. A Humane Society staffer trained as a clinic assistant is fostering Charlotte at her home overnight. During the day, she is cared for at the Veterinary Medical Center.

According to Humane Society President Kathy Warnick, the organization has increased to $4,000 the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for inflicting this horrible abuse. “Our Rescues and Investigations division is continuing to investigate in the area the dog was found and would like to talk with anyone who has information that could help bring the abuser to justice.”
