Why Should I Volunteer?

Every year more than 90,000 animals are helped by the Humane Society of Missouri. We have many dedicated staff members, but we cannot do it alone! Become a Humane Society of Missouri Volunteer and help give animals a second chance!

Orientation & Training Dates

There's nothing more rewarding than helping homeless animals. The purr of a kitten and the appreciative look in a dog's eyes say "Thank you." like nothing else can.

To become a Humane Society of Missouri volunteer, you must:

  • Attend Volunteer Orientation and HSMO Training
    Click Here to reserve your spot!
  • Complete a Volunteer Application and other necessary forms
  • Follow Humane Society of Missouri policies, procedures and guidelines
  • And above all…Be committed to the animals!

NOTE: Some volunteer opportunities have a minimum age requirement. Children under 18 (including guardian) will be required to speak with the Volunteer Manager prior to being accepted into the program.

Can my child volunteer?

The Humane Society of Missouri offers special volunteer opportunities for children ages 10 - 13 including:

  • Pet Marketer
    - Creating unique ways of attracting adopters to our shelter animals
  • Wish List Drive Coordinator
    -Organizing and running a drive to gather items on our Wish List to help our shelter animals
  • Greeter
  • Volunteer or Education Department Assistant

PLEASE NOTE: Children falling within this age group must have a parent or legal guardian with them while volunteering.

The Humane Society of Missouri currently offers opportunities for students completing service learning hours. At this time we do not offer court-ordered community service.

Foster Volunteer- See Foster Care Orientation Dates Below
Description:
Provide a second chance to orphaned or young puppies or kittens, pets with minor behavioral problems and sick/injured animals by caring for and socializing them until they are ready for adoption.
Location: Fosters will be housed in your home.
Age: Must be at least 18 years old.

After attending Volunteer Orientation, you must attend one of the below Foster Care Orientations:

Adoption Counselor
Description:

Interact with staff, the public, and our shelter animals to help make successful adoption matches.

NOTE: This opportunity involves direct animal contact, physical labor, and long periods of walking and standing.

Adoption Counselor/Shelter Assistant
Location: Westport Area Center
Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

Shelter Assistant
Description:

Assist staff and our shelter animals by addressing the daily needs of the animals and other tasks to help the shelter operate.

NOTE: This opportunity does not involve direct animal contact. It does involve physical labor, lifting, and long periods of walking and standing.

Shelter Assistant
Location: St. Louis City Center and Chesterfield Valley Center
Age: Must be at least 14 years of age.

 

 

Behavior Helpline Volunteer
Description:

Provide animal behavior counseling by phone and mail to pet owners who are experiencing problems. By assisting owners with possible solutions, we hope to reduce the number of animals relinquished to shelters.

Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

Administrative Support
Description:
Assist various departments with routine operating takes like data entry, folding, stuffing envelopes, copying, scanning and filing. Clerical Volunteer

Age: Must be at least 14 years of age.

 

Humane Educator
Description:
Educate children and adults about the Humane Society of Missouri, the need to treat animals with kindness and respect, and responsible animal care. Education Volunteer
Location: St. Louis City Center and Longmeadow Rescue Ranch
Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

Gift Shop Volunteer
Description:
Assists new pet adopters in choosing items needed for their new pets and helps create a pleasant environment through professional and courteous customer service. Gift Shop Volunteer
Location: St. Louis City Center
Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

Greeter
Description:

Help make every person's time at the Humane Society of Missouri pleasant and purposeful.

Location: St. Louis City Center
Age: Must be at least 10 years of age.

 

Pet Pal
Description:

Exercise and socialize the dogs currently housed in our shelters.

NOTE: This opportunity involves direct contact with dogs, outdoor activity in all kinds of weather, and is physically demanding.

Pet Pal
Location: St. Louis City Center, Westport, and Chesterfield Valley Centers
Age: Must be at least 16 years of age.

 

Ranch Volunteer
Description:
Assist in the care of the animals at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri. Help educate the community about responsible animal ownership. Ranch Assistant
Location: Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, located near Union, Missouri, is approximately a one-hour drive from St. Louis.
Age: Must be at least 16 years of age.

 

Ranch Groomer Volunteer
Description:
Work with Longmeadow Rescue Ranch trainer in working with and exercising horses. Ranch Groomer Volunteer
Location: Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, located near Union, Missouri, is approximately a one-hour drive from St. Louis.
Age: Must be at least 16 years of age.

 

 

Special Events Volunteer
Description:
Assist with special events hosted by the Humane Society of Missouri. Special events raise money to help the animals and educate the community about the purpose and function of the Humane Society of Missouri. Special Events Volunteer
Location: St. Louis City Center and various locations
Age: Must be at least 14 years of age.

 

Bark in the Park Volunteer
Description:
Assist with Bark in the Park, HSMO's largest fundraiser held in Forest Park in May. A full day of fun and events. Regular volunteer requirements apply. For more information on Bark in the Park, click here. Volunteers at Bark in the Park
Location: Pre-event opportunities at St. Louis City Center. Set up and day of opportunities at Cricket Field in Forest Park.
Age: Must be at least 16 years of age.

 

 

Upcoming Volunteer Orientation Dates

Attend Volunteer Orientation at the locations and times below. Orientation for St. Louis City and Wesport Area Center will be held at the Macklind Avenue location.
Orientation will review the history of the Humane Society of Missouri as well as introduce you to the volunteer opportunities available.

This is a free session lasting 45—60 minutes.

If you decide that you would like to volunteer, there will be additional training immediately following Orientation. Training lasts approximately 90 minutes. There is a $10 training fee for which you will receive all printed materials and a volunteer t-shirt.
